Why Choose Karl Arakelian, DMD for Dental Crowns?

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Depending on the extent of the damage, a dental crown may be the best solution for restoring your tooth. In some cases, a dental filling that is no longer properly protecting a tooth will need to be replaced. The general rule-of-thumb is if a dental filling is taking two-thirds or more of natural tooth enamel, a crown is necessary to restore long-term function.

If your tooth is in severe pain or you recently cracked it as a result of physical trauma, a crown will be needed. Long-term decay can leave the pulp exposed, which houses vulnerable nerves, tissue, and blood vessels. If exposed to oral bacteria, it can easily trigger an infection and require root canal therapy. By sealing the tooth with a custom-made crown, you can effectively avoid this outcome, save money on treatment, and avoid a world of discomfort.

In order to create the crown, Dr. Arakelian needs to capture impression of your tooth first. He’ll also need to remove a very small amount of tooth enamel so that the crown can be effectively anchored to the affected tooth. The capture process is done via a digital impression system, so there’s no need to bite into the gray, putty-like material that you may already be used to if you currently have restorations.

Once the impression is captured, the image is displayed in a 3D image via advanced software. The 3M True Definition Scanner makes it easy for Dr. Arakelian to make adjustments to this image and quickly send it to a dental lab for fabrication. Once created, you’ll come back to our office to have the crown placed. We’ll be sure to make any adjustments as needed to ensure comfort and long-term functionality.
